Causes of Anxiety

Anxiety is a psychological state characterized by many behavioral and cognitive aspects. The different aspects merge to create feelings of apprehension, worry, fear and general feelings of an unpleasant nature. Anxiety could be considered a standard reaction to stress. It can caused by many factors ranging from stimulus to genetics.

Environmental factors are a major examples of what causes anxiety. Stressful events in one’s life or traumatic events are triggers for anxiety. For example, the death of a spouse or loved one is considered an environmental factor that can create an anxiety disorder. Also, divorce, martial troubles, financial issues, retirement, and pregnancy are major contributing factors of anxiety. Even an environmental factor as basic as being social to your co-workers can affect your anxiety level. Work, in general, is one of the top anxiety triggers. Whether it be troubles with a boss or issues with your salary, work is a major factor in what causes anxiety.

Genetics also play a large part in what causes anxiety. Some studies show that genetics can give a person an increased likely hood of developing certain types of anxiety disorders. For people who have a predisposition to developing anxiety disorders, the before mentioned environmental factors can increase the effects of the anxiety. The person who has a genetic predisposition would stand a great chance of developing a disorder from the environment around them rather than someone who is not genetically inclined towards anxiety disorders. Finnish scientists identified specific genes in 2008 that show a statistical association with certain anxiety disorders.

Being negative in nature can cause anxiety. If a person is constantly telling themselves that they can’t do something and expecting the worst, that can certainly trigger anxiety. Fear or anger can be exhausting and often leads to negativity. Shifting your mind from a dark, gloomy place to a brighter, lighter place will lessen your negativity and anxiety. When negative thoughts occur, it is easy to slip into a state of anxiety and self-doubt. Taking a few seconds to stop and analyze the situation will lessen the stress. Close your eyes and find a happy place to lessen the anxiety.

There are many different types of anxiety ranging from social anxiety to performance anxiety. Some types of anxiety can even be a direct cause of medication or stem from other health issues, such as heart failure. Anxiety disorders typically respond well to treatment. The type of treatment depends on what type of anxiety that you are suffering from. In general, most anxiety disorders are treated with medicine or therapy, or a combination of the two.
